Rio Tinto dice que la producción mineral de hierro cae un 18% en el cuarto trimestre

La producción de mineral de hierro de Rio Tinto cayó en un 18% en el cuarto trimestre del año pasado, debido a una menor demanda de las siderúrgicas chinas. El cuarto grupo minero del mundo no entregó mayores sorpresas en sus operaciones durante el trimestre a diciembre en su reporte del jueves, aunque dijo que las ganancias por el aluminio se verían afectadas por la caída de los precios. La firma, que está recortando los costos y vendiendo activos para ayudar a pagar sus deudas, reportó que la producción de mineral de hierro en el cuarto trimestre fue de 31,8 millones de toneladas, y que las ventas cayeron en un 23%, a 33,6 millones de toneladas. "No creo que el reporte de producción trimestral fue tan distinto a las expectativas", dijo el jefe de investigación de recursos de UBS, Glyn Lawcock. Rio Tinto dijo en noviembre que recortaría su tasa de producción de mineral de hierro en un 10%, reduciendo su meta de envíos anuales a entre 170 y 175 millones de toneladas. Las ventas durante todo el 2008 fueron de 171,4 millones de toneladas.
