El estudio Igniting Growth in Consumer Technology, realizado entre 28.000 consumidores en 28 países, y que será presentado en Las Vegas del 6 al 9 de enero durante el Consumer Electronics Show (CES), constata que para casi la mitad (47%) de los encuestados, la preocupación por la seguridad y los riesgos de privacidad figuran entre las tres primeras barreras para comprar un dispositivo y servicio de IoT, entre los que se incluyen, entre otros, smartwatches, wearables de fitness y termostatos para casas inteligentes.

De los encuestados que poseen o tienen previsto comprar un dispositivo de IoT este año, casi tres cuartos de ellos (69%) son conscientes de que estos productos pueden ser hackeados y, por lo tanto, sufrir el robo de datos o averías del dispositivo.

Dentro del grupo de propietarios o de aquellos que tienen previsto comprar un dispositivo de IoT en 2016, más de un tercio (37%) ha decidido ser más cautelosos al utilizar estos dispositivos y servicios; el 24% ha pospuesto la compra de un dispositivo IoT o la suscripción a un servicio de IoT; y el 18% ha dejado de utilizar sus dispositivos IoT o ha interrumpido sus servicios de IoT hasta que pueda conseguir garantías más seguras.

Demanda decreciente de smartphones y tablets

El estudio destaca también la tímida demanda para dispositivos tecnológicos entre los consumidores tradicionales. Por ejemplo, menos de la mitad (48%) de los encuestados dicen que tienen previsto comprar un smartphone este año, seis puntos por debajo del 54% del año pasado.

 

En este sentido, el número de personas que está valorando comprar una nueva televisión o una tablet este año – 30% y 29% respectivamente – también ha caído con respecto al 38% para ambos tipos de dispositivos del año pasado.

 

“La desaceleración del mercado de tecnología de consumo es irrefutable, seria y global” indica Sami Luukkonen, Global Managing Director for Accenture’s Electronics and High Tech Group. “El mercado ya no lo dominan los dispositivos más llamativos – al contrario, la cuestión ahora es proveer servicios digitales seguros, innovadores y prácticos, que ofrezcan una colaboración más abierta. Como la demanda de dispositivos disminuye, la industria necesita un giro radical hacia servicios innovadores y con un valor añadido que los consumidores sean capaces de utilizar con confianza”.

 

Mercado plano para dispositivos de IoT 

 

El estudio revela también una demanda limitada en el mercado de dispositivos de IoT, con el que la industria ha contado para dirigir el crecimiento, mientras que otros mercados como el de los smartphone madura.

 

Solo el 13% de los encuestados, por ejemplo, tienen previsto comprar un smartwatch el próximo año, apenas un punto porcentual más que el año pasado. El estudio desvela, además, un estancamiento similar en la demanda de otros dispositivos como pantallas de fitness, dispositivos wearables de salud, termostatos inteligentes y cámaras conectadas a la vigilancia doméstica – cada uno de ellos son mencionados solo como una compra prevista por el 9% de los encuestados, en torno al mismo porcentaje que el año pasado. Las ventas de smartwatches han sido particularmente desafiantes para productores y retailers dado que los productos no están alcanzando las expectativas de los consumidores sobre la duración de la batería, facilidad de uso y diseño.

 

“A pesar de todas las promesas, el mercado de Internet de las Cosas se ha revelado a sí mismo como un arma de doble filo”, dice Luukkonen. “La oportunidad del mercado es enorme, pero las preocupaciones por la seguridad y la facilidad de uso impiden su potencial a corto y largo plazo. Para incentivar este mercado, las compañías de tecnología de consumo deberían considerar seriamente los ecosistemas, el intercambio de datos y la creación de servicios integrados a través de múltiples compañías, así como el diseño de una casa conectada integralmente a través de una cámara de seguridad doméstica, el termostato y la cerradura de la puerta”.

 

“Estas compañías necesitan plantearse invertir más en servicios innovadores y en hacer las vidas online de los consumidores más seguras, convenientes y enriquecedoras”, añade Luukkonen. “Hasta que la promesa del IoT no responda a las expectativas de los consumidores, el mercado de IoT se mantendrá como una promesa más que como un beneficio y hará poco por reforzar el mercado digital de consumo”.

 

Metodología

 

Entre octubre y noviembre de 2015, Accenture ha llevado a cabo una encuesta online con 28.000 consumidores en Australia, Brasil, Canadá, China, la República Checa, Francia, Alemania, Hungría, India, Indonesia, Italia, Japón, Méjico, Holanda, Filipinas, Polonia, Rumanía, Rusia, Arabia Saudí, Eslovaquia, Sudáfrica, Corea del Sur, España, Suecia, Turquía, Emiratos Árabes Unidos, Reino Unido y Estados Unidos. La muestra en cada país representa la población online, con encuestados en un rango de edad entre los 14 y los 55 años.
