Según Venancio Martínez Suarez, Presidente de SEPEAP, “se trata de un programa pionero a nivel mundial, en el que hemos participado las principales sociedades científicas implicadas en la salud nasal y la recomendación de aguas de mar como tratamiento adyuvante, que ha pretendido establecer una base de consenso y discusión sobre las diferentes aguas de mar y sus características, para la puesta en marcha de iniciativas de formación e información tanto para profesionales sanitarios como para usuarios, que tengan por objetivo establecer recomendaciones prácticas de uso en la higiene y las afecciones de las vías respiratorias y mejorar el nivel de conocimiento de las diferentes aguas de mar.

Entre el consenso de los especialistas que han participado en la investigación, debe resaltarse que 8 de cada 10, coinciden en la conveniencia de usar agua de mar frente a suero fisiológico para la congestión, la rinitis, la sinusitis, la rinitis alérgica o la higiene nasal.

Igualmente, en la investigación con usuarios, 7 de cada 10 prefieren agua de mar al suero tradicional, consideran que es fácil de usar y produce una sensación agradable, incluso declaran percibir que reduce los días de enfermedad”.

Como resultado de la investigación, se ha elaborado el primer decálogo a nivel mundial de recomendaciones del lavado nasal con agua de mar, en base a las características de las diferentes aguas de mar, sus efectos beneficiosos, y sus indicaciones como tratamiento de ayuda para el alivio de síntomas como la congestión nasal y la mucosidad.

Dicho decálogo de recomendaciones establece que, por lo general es preferible:

  • El agua de mar por su composición frente al uso de suero fisiológico por su exclusiva composición de oligoelementos y su menor acidez que activa el aclaramiento mucociliar, según estudios previos.
  • La aplicación en partículas finas y baja presión, frente al chorro o irrigación, dada la dispersión más homogénea e intercambio de sales y oligoelementos que se consigue.
  • El uso de soluciones isotónicas, frente al uso de soluciones hipertónicas, ya que ofrecen un balance más equilibrado con el medio fisiológico interno.

Adicionalmente y con la colaboración de los médicos especialistas que han participado en dicho estudio, se ha realizado una encuesta a nivel nacional entre los usuarios de aguas de mar en el lavado nasal, para conocer la percepción de beneficios, hábitos de uso y satisfacción global.

En la encuesta han participado más de 1300 usuarios, que en su mayoría declararon haber utilizado el producto Sterimar, comercializado por Reig Jofre. Entre los principales beneficios observados frente a sueros fisiológicos destacaron que:

  • El producto es fácil de usar, tiene un tamaño adecuado y la sensación tras su aplicación es agradable gracias a la fina y suave pulverización que permite humedecer la nariz de manera uniforme.
  • El mayor beneficio percibido es el alivio y la reducción de la congestión y la mucosidad, mejorando la respiración. También han destacado la reducción de los días de enfermedad o duración de los síntomas respecto a ocasiones previas.
