Telefónica pisa el acelerador para tener la red más eficiente del mercado en términos de energía y carbono. Gracias a los avances en su Plan de Energía Renovable, 2018 terminará con el 50% de su consumo de electricidad renovable, frente al 47% del cierre de 2017. Se prevé que en 2019 se superará el 70%.

El Plan se apoya en cuatro líneas de acción en función de los diferentes mercados en los que opera y la regulación vigente en cada uno: adquisición de electricidad renovable con garantía de origen; acuerdos de compra de energía a largo plazo (PPAs); acuerdos bilaterales de menor duración y autogeneración.

Los principales avances se han producido este año en Brasil, México y Chile. Desde noviembre, el 100% del consumo de energía de Telefónica en Brasil provendrá de fuentes renovables, con la obtención de energía renovable certificada. Y en diciembre, contará con generación distribuida de energía proveniente de CGHs (Centrales Generadoras Hidroeléctricas) en el área de concesión de la Compañía Energética de Minas Gerais - CEMIG. Así, Vivo reducirá un 65% sus emisiones de CO2 a partir de 2019.

Día internacional contra el Cambio Climático
“La transición de Telefónica hacia la descarbonización es un hecho. Estamos creciendo al mismo tiempo que controlamos nuestro consumo de energía y usamos electricidad renovable. Esto es positivo tanto para la compañía como para los clientes y el planeta. Con ello no solo estamos reduciendo nuestros costes de operación, sino que también ofrecemos a nuestros clientes una red más verde, con la que juntos podemos contribuir a frenar el cambio climático”, explica Enrique Blanco, Global CTIO de Telefónica.

Este Plan de Energía Renovable reportará al grupo un ahorro potencial del 6% en la factura de energía en 2020 y hasta un 26% en 2030, y evitará que lleguen a la atmósfera cada año alrededor de 1,5 millones de toneladas de CO2 en 2030.

PROYECTOS A MEDIDA

Por su parte, en México Telefónica ha empezado a consumir energía del parque solar más grande del país, KAIXO Solar, que cuenta con una extensión similar a la de 200 campos de fútbol. Con ello, el 40% del consumo de electricidad de la compañía en el país será renovable.

En países más regulados como Chile, Telefónica compra un 20% de su energía eléctrica en el mercado libre, lo que le ha permitido optar por un suministrador renovable.

En Uruguay y Costa Rica, la compañía ha seguido potenciando el uso de energía solar y son ya prácticamente 100% renovables gracias al mix de generación del propio país.

Además de la compra, Telefónica apuesta por incorporar la autogeneración renovable en los emplazamientos más idóneos. Hoy la empresa tiene más de 4.000 estaciones base que funcionan con energía renovable, y en países como Uruguay la compañía está apostando por vender incluso la energía limpia excedente de su actividad a la red de distribución eléctrica.

OBJETIVOS GLOBALES DE ENERGÍA Y CAMBIO CLIMÁTICO

Además del Plan de Energía Renovable, Telefónica cuenta con el Programa de Eficiencia Energética para cumplir los compromisos globales de la compañía en Energía y Cambio Climático para el periodo 2015-2020, avalados por la iniciativa Science Based Targets (SBTi) por contribuir a la reducción de emisiones de CO2 establecida en el Acuerdo de París:

  • Reducir en un 50% el consumo de energía por unidad de tráfico, objetivo logrado en 2017, con dos años de antelación.
  • Comenzar a desligar el crecimiento del negocio de las emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero, disminuyéndolas un 30% en términos absolutos para 2020 y un 50% para 2030.
  • Ahorrar 90 millones de euros por proyectos de eficiencia energética.

Apostar por las energías renovables como fuente sostenible para el negocio, usando el 50% de la electricidad de fuentes renovables en 2020 –objetivo logrado- y el 100% en 2030
