¿Por qué recomendaría a un inversor contratar un fondo de rentabilidad absoluta? ¿Qué ventajas tiene?

Los fondos de rentabilidad absoluta son muy idóneos para carteras discrecionales. Cuando tienes una cartera discrecional ese fondo lo que potencialmente puede añadir es cierta descorrelación. Eso es que se comporta de otra manera, están expuestos a otras influencias, no siguen la misma pauta que la inversión tradicional y es una forma de diversificar más la cartera. Además no suelen ser tan direccionales como los fondos tradicionales, como la renta variable tradicional o la renta fija tradicional. Suelen tener posiciones largas y cortas, lo cual significa que su exposición a la dirección al mercado es menor. También tiene un objetivo de preservación de capital muchas veces, eso es proteger capital en momentos de volatilidad y yo creo que es un instrumento sobre todo de diversificación y en estos momentos con los tipos a cero y la renta fija ofreciendo pocas rentabilidades, sobre todo para carteras conservadoras y carteras moderadas es una forma de diversificar más y tener potencialmente algo de rentabilidad pero con una volatilidad controlada.

¿Cuál es la estrategia más rentable ahora mismo para aprovecharse de la rentabilidad de los mercados?

En realidad nosotros tenemos siete fondos distintos de este tipo. Es un mundo con sus complejidades. Hay estrategias de todo tipo. Un producto que nosotros creemos que es una buena solución es un fondo que se llama BNY Mellon Absolute Insight, que en realidad lo que hace es invertir en distintas estrategias de rentabilidad absoluta. Tiene como seis estrategias distintas y eso ofrece diversificación adicional. El objetivo del fondo es Euribor + 4% con volatilidades muy bajas. Entonces es un fondo conservador que lo que hace es buscar rentabilidades modestas, pero interesantes con un riesgo muy controlado.

Los fondos de rentabilidad absoluta se caracterizan por abrir posiciones cortas. ¿Se fijan en algún sector para eso ahora?

Nosotros cuando abrimos posiciones largas y cortas lo hacemos típicamente dentro del mismo sector. Eso es que igual encontramos una empresa farmacéutica que creemos que está cotizando a una valoración muy atractiva donde los fundamentales son muy interesantes. Y otro competidor donde vemos los fundamentales que se están deteriorando. Donde la valoración está más extendida con respecto a la posición que queremos ir larga. Entonces son posiciones de valor relativo, identificando valoraciones atractivas para ir larga dentro de un sector y valoraciones menos atractivas donde vamos a ir cortas.

¿Se están beneficiando de situaciones adversas como las de China o Brasil para invertir?

Por lo general si hablamos de la cartera actualmente solemos tener una exposición neta, eso es una posición un poco más corta a aquellas acciones europeas que tienen exposición o dependen de las ventas emergentes. Tendemos a estar más cortos ahí. Estaríamos más largos en aquellas acciones que tienen más exposición al consumo europeo o al norteamericano. Consumo discrecional. Estoy hablando de que preferimos los temas de consumo o crecimiento de consumo. Sin embargo, estamos más cortos en los que tienen exposiciones a países emergentes o empresas ligadas a commodities.

¿Usan derivados dentro de su estrategia?

Sí, nosotros principalmente para construir posiciones cortas utilizamos swaps con bancos de inversión. Eso te permite básicamente tener la misma exposición que yendo corto a la acción pero a través de un derivado. Las reglas de los fondos de inversión que están registrados en España lo que hacen es permitir la utilización de swaps pero no permiten cortos a través de pedir prestadas las acciones. Ahí entonces sí que construimos las posiciones cortas con swaps. Las posiciones largas son típicamente acciones tradicionales que compramos con efectivo.

Salvando 2008 los años de crisis fueron especialmente positivos para su fondo. ¿Qué estrategias llevaron a cabo en ese momento?

Depende de la estrategia. La primera que mencioné al principio, la estrategia multiestrategia, tiene seis estrategias subyacentes y cada una está haciendo una cosa distinta. Al final, como dices, desde 2008 hemos tenido un entorno positivo de bolsas con la excepción de 2011 que fue un año más complicado, pero la idea de estas estrategias es precisamente no depender de la direccionalidad de las bolsas. Depender de la habilidad de cada equipo de gestión.

¿Invierten también en renta fija? ¿En qué activos?

En general nos cuesta mucho encontrar valor en renta fija tradicional de crédito. En high yield empieza a salir algo de oportunidad en algunas emisiones específicas pero en general en lo que es renta fija tradicional de crédito estamos teniendo muy poca exposición. En lugar de tener exposición direccional de este tipo preferimos posiciones dentro de lo que es renta fija que son menos direccionales. Posiciones en curva. Nosotros creemos que la curva de Estados Unidos, incluso con la subida de tipos de interés, tenderá a aplanarse. Entonces estamos largos en el bono a 30 años en Estados Unidos y cortos en el bono a 10 años. Eso es una posición que no depende de la evolución de los mercados de renta fija, sino acertar con la rentabilidad en curva. Pensamos que es un momento más de este tipo de estrategias menos direccionales y estamos todavía bastante cautos en aumentar nuestra exposición a renta fija de crédito tradicional.

¿Aprovechan también la situación del mercado de divisas para invertir con todas las decisiones de los bancos centrales?

Sí, nosotros tenemos dedicado un fondo de rentabilidad absoluta de divisas que se llama Absolute Insight Currency Fund y ahí estamos en general más largos en estos momentos del dólar y cortos en dos tipos de divisas: las divisas emergentes como la lira turca o el real brasileño, y estamos cortos en algunos países que dependen de materias primas como Nueva Zelanda o Australia. Entonces al final creemos que con lo que es la política de tipos de interés en EEUU, que creemos que subirán más pronto que tarde, y con todos los problemas que vemos con esta política y el impacto que puede tener en los países emergentes. Con la caída de crecimiento esperada de China y el impacto que eso tiene en las commodities hace que en general estemos largos en dólar y cortos en otro tipo de divisas como de emergentes o economías ligadas a materias primas.

¿Cómo ven la situación del mercado de materias primas? ¿Creen que se ha tocado suelo y se puede hacer algún tipo de estrategia?

Puede haber tocado suelo o puede caer más. Lo que no esperamos es una recuperación muy fuerte del precio de las materias primas. Entonces en esos niveles pueden subir ligeramente los precios o bajar levemente, pero no vemos grandes motivos para una revalorización muy rápida del precio de las materias primas. China quiere reorientar su economía hacia la demanda doméstica, lo ha dicho claramente, y el impacto de una demanda reducida en China. Con todo el exceso de suministro en muchos segmentos de commodities, debido a los años de exceso de inversión de capital en ese segmento hace que nosotros seamos escépticos sobre la posibilidad de un rebote en los precios de las materias primas.

¿Qué rentabilidad espera para su fondo a final de año?

Depende. Si hablo de BNY Mellon Absolute Insight Fund, es un fondo muy conservador, tranquilo, cuyo objetivo es Euribor + 4%. Si logramos en el año este tipo de objetivo estamos cumpliendo con lo que es el objetivo del fondo. Creo que este año podemos terminar en 2% o 3%. Es un fondo que más bien es conservador no es un fondo donde de un mes a otro se vea una revalorización muy marcada.
