Fondos de oro, rentables, pero ¿seguros?

Es todo un clásico pero no por ello deja de ser atractivo: invertir en oro es, posiblemente, una de las mejores opciones en estos tiempos. Aún así, alertan los expertos, se trata de una inversión no exenta de riesgos y más en momentos como el actual en los que el precio del preciado metal sube no debido a la demanda real de oro sino a factores financieros, lo que repercute sobremanera en la volatilidad del producto. Volatilidad a parte, o incluida, lo cierto es que los fondos de renta variable oro lideran, a estas alturas del año, la tabla de rentabilidad con una subida desde inicios de 2009 de algo más de un 19%

Añadir Estrategias de Inversión en Google
No hay un producto financiero que lo esté haciendo mejor desde que comenzó el ejercicio. Y es que, tal y como explica David Field, gestor del fondo Carmignac Commodities, “el oro representa el activo refugio por excelencia”. Para este experto, “mientras persistan las incertidumbres sobre la salud de los balances de los bancos y sobre el conjunto del sistema financiero, este sector ofrece unas perspectivas excelentes”. Una opinión que comparte Miguel Cedillo, analista de DifBroker quien cree que “a corto plazo, el oro puede volver a cotizar en máximos, que son los 1.014 dólares”.

Algo más escéptico con la evolución del preciado metal se muestra Carlos Fernández, Responsable de Análisis de fondos de Inversis Banco. “Los analistas técnicos ven subiendo al oro con bastante estabilidad y poca volatilidad. Nosotros –comenta este experto financiero- tenemos una opinión distinta”. Según explica el analista de Inversis Banco “la subida del oro no está fundamentada en una demanda real de oro para la joyería o por motivos industriales, está motivada –asegura Fernández- por una demanda financiera vinculada al crecimiento de fondos cotizados y a la cobertura de posiciones”. En estos momentos, los niveles de inversión en oro físico por parte de los ETFs alcanzan niveles récord. “38.000 millones de euros” señala David Field, “lo que representa el máximo histórico desde su lanzamiento a comienzos de la década de los años 90”.

Una demanda financiera que lleva al Responsable de Análisis de fondos de Inversis Banco a poner el acento en la precaución a la hora de invertir en este tipo de activo porque “como la demanda es financiera estamos expuestos –dice- a la volatilidad que introduce en este tipo de productos”. Una volatilidad que puede alcanzar un grado de entre un 20 y un 30% por lo que, “no hay que comprarlo con la idea de que es muy seguro” sentencia el experto que añade, “en cualquier caso, para aquellos inversores más a corto plazo, el oro está en tendencia”. Una opinión que comparte el gestor del fondo Carmignac Commodities que explica, “la tendencia del sector sigue siendo positiva”. Y aunque no resulta fácil hablar de un objetivo concreto, “si la tendencia alimentada por el creciente interés de los fondos generalistas por el oro continúa –explica David Field- podríamos ver cómo el precio del oro vuelve a los máximos”.

Existen varias formas de jugar este tipo de activos, entre ellas, a través de fondos de inversión o bien a través de ETFs referenciados al oro, pero también se puede invertir a través de warrants o de CDFs. Si la opción es hacerlo a través de fondos cotizados, el consejo de los expertos pasa por hacerlo a través de un ETF que invierta directamente en el preciado metal. “Como sería el caso del Juluis Baer Physical Gold Fund que invierte directamente en el oro físico”, comenta Carlos Fernández. Caso distinto sería invertir en oro a través de un fondo de inversión. Aquí el consejo de los expertos sería el hacerlo no en la materia prima directamente “sino en fondos que inviertan en compañías extractoras del metal”, apunta Javier Velasco, gestor de fondos de Inversis Banco que da dos nombres “el Fortis US Opportunities que si bien está centrado –dice- en renta variable estadounidense, el top ten de sus compañías está copado por empresas de oro que pesan más de un 20% en las carteras y el BlackRock Gold Mining que invierte 100% en compañías de extracción de oro”.

Evolución de los fondos de renta variable oro

Hasta la fecha, los fondos de renta variable oro comandan la tabla de rentabilidad de los fondos de inversión. Según los datos que muestra la consultora especializada Morningstar, a estas alturas del ejercicio acumulan una subida del 19,44% y ninguno de los fondos que operan en la categoría se encuentran en negativo. Es más, varios de estos productos muestran rentabilidades superiores al 40% en lo que va de año. Este sería el caso del Stabilitas Pacific Gold+Metals que renta desde el comienzo del ejercicio un 49% y cuyas cinco principales posiciones están cubiertas por Kooteriay Gold (6,94%), Cljrduro P,esources Corporatior (6,69%), Western Potas’i (5,95%), Cold Eagle Miws (5,76%) y W&E Rn Potasti Corpoiation/Western (5,12%).

Otro de los fondos destacados de la categoría sería el SGAM Fund Equities Gold Mines. Fondo que sube un 20,83% desde inicios de año y está invertido en acciones de compañías dedicadas a la explotación de minas de oro y de otros minerales preciosos, como el diamante. La gestión del fondo se basa –explican desde Mornigstar- en las cualidades propias de las empresas mineras e industriales y en sus perspectivas de crecimiento, independientemente de la evolución del precio de los metales preciosos. Por ello, la cartera del fondo está invertida en su mayoría en pequeñas empresas australianas y canadienses. Las cinco principales posiciones del fondo están cubiertas por Newmont Mining Corporation (9,87%), Barrick Gold Corporation (9,46%), GoldCorp (9,40%), Kinross Gold Corporation (9,30%) y Randgold Resources (4,96%).

En una línea de inversión similar al fondo anterior, se mueve el BlackRock Global Funds World Gold que acumula una subida del 16,69% desde comienzos de año y cuyo objetivo de inversión se basa en maximizar el crecimiento del capital expresado en dólares estadounidenses fundamentalmente a través de la inversión en acciones de empresas de extracción de oro de todo el mundo. Asimismo puede invertir en otras acciones de metales preciosos, metales básicos y de empresas relacionadas con la minería. Sus cinco principales posiciones las cubren empresas como Newcrest Mining Limited (10,99%), Kinross Gold Corporation (8,88%), Barrick Gold Corporation (7,79%), Newmont Mining Corporation (,6,85%) y GoldCorp (,6,63%).
