Las criptomonedas están aquí para quedarse

A finales de noviembre de 2024, la capitalización total del mercado de criptomonedas alcanzó la impresionante cifra de 3,4 billones de dólares, lo que sitúa esta clase de activos entre las más voluminosas a escala mundial. Esta cifra supera la capitalización bursátil de los activos inmobiliarios cotizados (1,9 billones de dólares) y las materias primas en general (1 billón de dólares) y rivaliza con otras categorías bien establecidas, como la renta variable de pequeña capitalización de mercados emergentes (2,8 billones de dólares), los bonos de alto rendimiento (2,8 billones de dólares) y los bonos ligados a la inflación (2,6 billones de dólares).

Sentimiento de los inversores

A pesar de estos logros, persiste el escepticismo. Según nuestra Encuesta a Inversores Profesionales 2024, aproximadamente el 15 % de los encuestados ve falta de demanda de criptomonedas, y algo más del 13 % sigue considerando las criptomonedas como una moda pasajera.

Este escepticismo pasa por alto varios hitos significativos en el camino de las criptomonedas hacia la financiación generalizada y la institucionalización que hemos observado en 2024. A modo de ejemplo:

  • Los productos cotizados en bolsa (ETPs) de bitcoin al contado se lanzaron en Estados Unidos y recibieron más de 24.000 millones de dólares en entradas netas durante los 10 primeros meses de 2024.
  • Importantes instituciones, como la Junta de Inversiones del Estado de Wisconsin y la Dotación de la Universidad de Emory, han invertido en ETPs de bitcoin, citando sus propiedades de cobertura frente a la inflación y el potencial de diversificación de sus carteras.

Como se muestra en la gráfica 1, aunque la mayoría de los flujos de 2024 han ido a parar a ETPs de Bitcoin al contado domiciliados en Estados Unidos, Europa sigue siendo líder en diversidad y madurez de su oferta. Aquí los inversores pueden invertir en una amplia gama de ETPs de monedas individuales y cesta de criptomonedas, muchos de los cuales cuentan con historiales relativamente extensos.

De cara al futuro

Se espera que la evolución del mercado de ETPs de criptomonedas se acelere a medida que los mercados estadounidense y europeo sigan madurando. 

En Estados Unidos, el reciente lanzamiento de los ETPs de bitcoin y Ethereum al contado podría allanar el camino para la aprobación reglamentaria de otros productos de criptomonedas, ampliando el abanico de oportunidades de inversión a disposición de los inversores institucionales y minoristas. Es probable que esta creciente accesibilidad atraiga flujos de entrada aún mayores, integrando aún más las criptomonedas en el ecosistema financiero tradicional.

Mientras tanto, el liderazgo consolidado de Europa y su variada oferta de productos, la posicionan para seguir siendo un centro de innovación en el espacio de los ETPs de criptomonedas.

Como muestra la gráfica 2, los ETPs sobre bitcoin cotizan ya en la mayoría de los mercados desarrollados, lo que ofrece a los inversores institucionales de todo el mundo un acceso simplificado a las criptomonedas. Esta disponibilidad generalizada no sólo mejora las oportunidades de diversificación de las carteras, sino que también fomenta una mayor adopción por parte de los agentes institucionales que antes se veían disuadidos por las complejidades de la inversión directa en criptomonedas.

Conclusión

Los datos ponen de manifiesto una desconexión entre la realidad del mercado de criptomonedas y la percepción de algunos inversores. Con una capitalización de mercado que rivaliza con las clases de activos tradicionales y un historial demostrado, las criptomonedas han dejado de ser una inversión de nicho, para convertirse en un actor formidable en el ecosistema financiero mundial. 

Para los inversores que descartan el sector como una tendencia pasajera, puede merecer la pena reevaluar su postura en vista de las pruebas.
