Telefónica y la FAO –Organización de Naciones Unidas para la Alimentación y la Agricultura– han firmado hoy una alianza para colaborar en el desarrollo y la puesta en marcha de iniciativas de innovación, digitalización y análisis de datos en el sector agrícola para potenciar el desarrollo de la agricultura, la seguridad alimentaria y la nutrición. Esta alianza pone un énfasis especial en la necesidad de brindar un apoyo concreto a las comunidades locales rurales/agrarias en el acceso a la información.

Este acuerdo tiene una duración inicial de tres años y está en línea con el rol clave del sector privado para alcanzar los objetivos de desarrollo sostenible (ODS) de la ONU, y más concretamente en el papel que compañías como Telefónica pueden jugar en las actividades estratégicas de la FAO, facilitando la transformación digital de sectores productivos como la agricultura, la pesca, y/o el sector forestal, así como la gestión de recursos naturales y cambio climático, entre otros.

El acuerdo marco alcanzado entre ambas organizaciones ha sido firmado hoy en Roma por José Graziano da Silva, Director General de la FAO, y por Trinidad Jiménez, Directora Global de Estrategia de Asuntos Públicos.

Esta colaboración se materializa inicialmente en tres líneas de actuación concretas que ya se están poniendo en marcha. En primer lugar, ambas partes están colaborando conjuntamente en la aplicación de soluciones de Internet de las Cosas (IoT) en el sector agrícola. La aplicación de soluciones de IoT en este ámbito permite optimizar procesos y tiempos, y establecer sistemas de eficiencia en el uso de los recursos hídricos.

Así, Telefónica, a través del IoT, y la FAO, han iniciado ya un proyecto piloto de eficiencia hídrica, siguiendo algoritmos de inteligencia artificial desarrollados y probados por el Centro de Investigación y Desarrollo de Telefónica Chile, a ser replicados en zonas definidas previamente del llamado Corredor Seco Centroamericano. En concreto, el piloto se está desarrollando en comunidades específicas identificadas en El Salvador y Colombia. La aplicación de esta solución tecnológica utiliza hardware especializado, almacenamiento en la nube, procesamiento de datos y recomendaciones auto-generadas que se ponen a disposición de los agricultores locales, facilitándoles la toma de decisiones relacionadas con los riegos con el objetivo de garantizar un uso eficiente y óptimo del agua.

Los resultados derivados de esta iniciativa de IoT se compartirán con la FAO para que puedan usarse en su interlocución con los gobiernos locales de países de la región y promover de esta forma el uso de soluciones más eficientes y efectivas en el uso de los recursos naturales.

En segundo lugar, se ha puesto en marcha una iniciativa de uso de Big Data y analítica de datos con el objetivo de establecer patrones de alerta temprana. En este contexto, se va a realizar un análisis de cómo afecta el cambio climático a los movimientos poblacionales. La iniciativa –cuyo piloto se va a realizar en las zonas del Corredor Seco Centroamericano y Colombia más afectadas por los fenómenos de El Niño y La Niña– supone el análisis de la información cruzada entre el banco de datos mundial de meteorología de la FAO y los datos agregados y anonimizados de movilidad registrados por la Compañía.

De igual manera, el acuerdo incluye también un entorno importante y de gran alcance en Educación Digital y Desarrollo de Capacidades. Así, está prevista la incorporación de los contenidos educativos de la FAO a las plataformas abiertas de formación de Telefónica, como Miríadax, en forma de MOOCs (cursos online, abiertos y masivos) en español, con el objetivo de compartir conocimientos especializados en su área e impulsar el desarrollo agroalimentario, nutrición y desarrollo rural sostenible. De igual modo, ya se está trabajando conjuntamente en el desarrollo de contenidos específicos con el curso “Capitalización de Experiencias para la Capacitación Continua”.
